How Maple Woods Enterprises Helped a Company Achieve Sub-Millisecond Response Time for Their Business Applications

Problem:

A company that provides collections and call center services wanted to enable their customer service team to have all the relevant client information securely and in real time while they are on the call with clients. They also wanted to provide their team members with the flexibility to work at the office, remotely, or in a hybrid work environment. To achieve this goal, they rolled out a highly secure Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) powered by VMWare Horizon and integrated the Latitude Collections Software and Call Center services using Dial Connect. However, the multi-layered secure architecture along with the stringent call quality requirements of voice and video applications, introduced additional stress on the existing network from a packet processing, latency, and bandwidth standpoint.

Solution:

The company partnered with Maple Woods Enterprises to re-architect their network to meet the new requirements of their business applications. Maple Woods Enterprises initiated a Network Discovery and Assessment phase, tracking all application data flows on a hop-by-hop basis. This revealed that there were sub-optimal routing paths in place that were causing an extra 3-hops for packets traversing between the Columbus office and the data centers, resulting in additional delays. They also identified dangling subnets and VLANs, some of which were no longer in use but still in existence, resulting in an expansion of the attack vector. Additionally, they tracked down single points of failure on the uplinks towards internet service providers (ISPs).

Based on the findings from the Network Discovery and Assessment, Maple Woods Enterprises laid out a roadmap for network modernization. This included decommissioning the VLANs/subnets no longer in use, eliminating all static routes, introducing dynamic routing protocols, and migrating legacy firewalls to FortiGate Next Generation Firewalls supporting deep traffic visibility and security. Maple Woods Enterprises also collaborated with ISPs to bring to light the single points of failure on the ISP devices and provision additional ports for the P2P and internet circuits, as well as the importance of activating the bundling of ports for automatic failover.

Results:

The implementation of the network modernization project resulted in sub-millisecond response time from the applications. The customer service team was able to have all the relevant client information securely and in real time while they were on the call with clients, and they were also able to work from anywhere with the flexibility of a hybrid work environment.

Benefits:

The company achieved the following benefits as a result of working with Maple Woods Enterprises:

  • Sub-millisecond response time for business applications.

  • Increased security and visibility of network traffic.

  • Reduced risk of single points of failure.

  • Increased flexibility for remote and hybrid work.

Conclusion:

Maple Woods Enterprises helped this company achieve their goals of providing a better customer experience and improving the security and reliability of their network.
